Four of you went up the stairs of the New York Central Building this afternoon with Internal Revenue badges in your pockets. You walked into the Eagle Building Corporation on the ninth floor, lined everybody up against the wall, and went into the private office.
Salvatore Maranzano, the man who made himself boss of all bosses five months ago, is dead.
The other three are already on their way down. You stayed, because Charlie wants one more thing. Maranzano kept a list: the men he planned to have killed next. Charlie Luciano's name is on it. So is Vito Genovese's. That list cannot be here when the police arrive.
And somewhere on the stairs, Vincent 'Mad Dog' Coll is on his way up for a meeting. Nobody's told him it's cancelled. Search the reception, then the general office, then the private office, where the old man lies by his desk. The list is in his wall safe, and the safe takes a four-digit combination. Open it before Coll, or the police, reach the ninth floor.
